Our Collective

Being a member of the College of the Canyons Faculty Association has a positive impact on the quality of your work-life, the environment you teach in, and your ability to be an advocate for excellence in the classroom.

  • COCFA can provide legal protection and advice.

  • COCFA can provide support, guidance, and advice.

  • COCFA allows you to voice ideas, share educational trends, engage in debates, and with topics that you feel strongly about.

  • COCFA members give power to the bargaining position of the union for contract and labor negotiations.

COCFA has the power to collectively negotiate faculty contracts. Faculty contracts establish Total Compensation as well as provide, protect and enforce things like Association Rights, Faculty Leave, Load Banking, Salaries, Health and Welfare Benefits, Travel and Mileage and many other topics concerning faculty.

The term “Total Comp” refers to the total budget given to COCFA to cover Full-Time Salaries, Coaches, Overloads, Summer & Winter teaching assignments as well as Health & Welfare Contributions. It is helpful to understand what Total Comp means, because a negotiated increase of 3% to Total Comp in contract negotiations does not always mean a 3% raise for faculty.

This graphic illustrates how Total Comp was distributed in 2017-18.

How does a change in TOTAL COMP effect Faculty?

The difference between a 3.71% increase to Total Comp, and a 5.5% increase can result in some pretty substantial changes to faculty salaries and benefits. This graphic details one potential scenario.
